Sandburg Foundation Supports Students With More Than $200K in Annual Scholarships

The gift of education is one of the greatest gifts you can give. Scholarships through the Carl Sandburg College Foundation support students in their education journey and are made possible by generous contributions from community businesses, organizations and individuals, as well as faculty and staff through its annual giving campaign.

The Sandburg Foundation offers two ways that you can support students through scholarships: annual scholarships and endowed scholarships. For the 2021-22 academic year, the Foundation awarded 205 scholarships worth more than $200,000, and the following scholarships will be new for 2022-23. Carl Sandburg Prize
The Carl Sandburg Prize is given annually by the Carl Sandburg Historic Site Association to a full-time or part-time student at Sandburg in honor of Galesburg’s most famous son, Carl Sandburg. The prize is one-time only and is not renewable. Students who are degree-seeking (associate), as well as nondegree seeking (program), are eligible. The award may be applied to academic or non-academic expenses.

Future Face of Nursing
The Future Face of Nursing Scholarship was started by recent graduate Jessica Houdyshell in memory of John and Jennifer Houdyshell. This scholarship will be awarded to a deserving out-of-district student pursuing a degree in nursing. Applicants must have a 3.0 GPA and display financial need.

Katie Stone Memorial Scholarship
The Katie Stone Memorial Scholarship assists first-year associate degree nursing students who reside in Knox County with educational expenses. The Stone family hopes this scholarship helps support an incoming nursing student with required program expenses.

Knoxville American Legion Auxiliary Scholarship
The Knoxville American Legion Auxiliary Scholarship is intended for students residing in the Knoxville School District. The auxiliary would like to assist a student wishing to further their education, whether it be in a two-year degree or a certificate program. Preference is given to a veteran or student whose parent or grandparent is a veteran.

Kody Cares Firefighter and EMT Scholarship
The Kody Cares Firefighter and EMT Scholarship is in memory of Dakota “Kody” Taylor. From a young age, Kody knew that becoming a firefighter and helping others was his path and passion in life. The Kody Cares Firefighter and EMT Scholarship is available to returning or continuing students who also have a passion to pursue a firefighter/EMT program of study.

Phil and Mary Good Scholarship
Phil and Mary Good have spent a passionate and dynamic lifetime together, working to make their hometown community of Kewanee a better place for everyone. The success of their eponymous furniture store on Kewanee’s Main Street in the heart of downtown has shown that small, vibrant towns are a vital part of American society. This academic scholarship, open to all Sandburg students, pays homage to Phil and Mary’s cando, entrepreneurial approach to all things in life.

Upward Bound Math-Science Scholarship
Students must be a current Upward Bound Math-Science student or a graduate of the UBMS program and have a minimum 2.0 GPA.
